Adharian knew better than to struggle, captured again by the giant orc. The fury in his eyes should have scared her, but it didn’t. She didn’t just see fury in his silver eyes but concern. Tension and worry, for her, were written into every line of his angry body.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered. She shouldn’t have run. She knew that now. She wasn’t equipped to deal with this place, couldn’t survive out here. She needed him.

He grunted and let go of her arms.

“Stay,” he warned and turned back to the lion’s body. Lifting the massive form, he dropped it near the rock of the gulley wall and then placed a spread hand on the rock above. She drifted closer, wondering what he was doing as he closed his eyes, head bowed and his face shadowed by his thick, dark hair.

A shiver rolled through her as magic filled the air. It was orc magic, not the kind she was used to. Not the soft, almost delicate feeling of elven or faery magic in the air, but more complex. Like the stone it flowed into.

As she watched, the bottom of the rock wall oozed out, flowing over the lion and enveloping it. The rock turned black and soft as it took on the lion’s shape, solidifying into a statue of the animal with giant paws, a massive head with huge fangs and ears dropped back as it snarled.

She caught her breath. Even though she knew the lion was now rock, it was so lifelike—an obsidian lion, with streaks of green and brown passing through it like hair. The rock shone in the sunlight, smoothing the stone’s cracks and imperfections into the shape of the lion.

Gudvar straightened up.

“That’ll stop scavengers until I can come back for that hide,” he said, reaching out a hand impatiently toward her. “Come on. In case it had a mate. Unless you’d like to take your chances with that?”

She shook her head, her legs trembling as she stood. A few steps took her to his side, even though his expression was forbidding and severe. She swallowed nervously, her throat making a dry clack as she reached out to put her hand into his. She’d tried to run, and he could have left her to die. But he hadn’t. Instead, he’d come after her… saving her life.

His hand tightened over hers, and he turned, leading her back to the cave in silence. With each step, tension arched between them, her nerves winding tighter and tighter. Her ankle throbbed, but she ignored it. She had other things to worry about right now.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered as they reached the cave. She stood aside as he rolled the enormous boulder to block the door again and keep them safe.

Her gaze dropped worriedly to the nasty gashes on his arm. Blood stained his green-grey skin, the edges of the wounds ripped and angry. They would need cleaning and dressing. “Is there anything I can do?”

He snorted as he turned, looming over her. “Yeah, you can spread those soft thighs for me so I can taste that pretty little pussy.
